Nervous system origins mnemonic

Hello everyone :)
Let's get to CNS and PNS origins =D

Neural crest derivatives:
Neural creSt cells have S
Schwann cells have S
Sensory neurons have S
How I remember that neural crest cells give rise to post ganglionic autonomic neurons is that I remember adrenal medulla is derived from neural crest cells which is as good as a post ganglionic neuron!

Note: The cells that give rise to the adrenal medulla are called chromaffin cells.

Mesoderm gives rise to Microglia which are Macrophages of the CNS

Everything else in the CNS is derived from Neuroectoderm (Neural tube)
That is - CNS, ependymal cells, oligodendrocytes, astrocytes, retina, optic nerve.

Neurohypophysis is derived from Neural tube
Adenohypophysis (Anterior pitutary) is derived from Rathke's pouch (Surface ectoderm)

I like to club Alar plate (Sensory) and Basal plate (Motor) in the "sad mew" mnemonic. I'll post it again here :D

"Sad mew" mnemonic again xP
Cool fact:
Optic nerve is derived from neuroectoderm and is myelinated by oligodendrocytes.
All the other nerves of the PNS are myelinated by Schwann cells.
That's why,  is involved in Multiple sclerosis &
It is uninvolved in Guillain Barre syndrome (Peripheral demyelinating disease)
Optic nerve is incapable of regeneration after it's transection for the same reason.. It's the Schwann cells that provide a scaffold for regeneration and remyelination of the axon

That's all!
What's your origin? ;)

  1. Thankz for clinical correlation of optic nerve...was woundering why it was involved in MS &not in GBS..

This is express yourself space. Where you type create something beautiful! <3
Wondering what do I write? Well...
Tell us something you know better. You are a brilliant mind. Yes, you are! ^__^
Ask about something you don't understand @_@?
Compliment... Say something nice! =D
Be a good critic and correct us if something went wrong :|
