Study group discussion: Legionella confusion

A few days back, we had a discussion on legionella.

Legionella affects three systems - Lungs, GIT (diarrhoea) and CNS (Altered sensorium, confusion, etc).

Why does it cause CNS symptoms?
The reason is because it causes hyponatremia.

Why does it cause hyponatremia?

Due to increase in ADH secretion.

  1. Hi, I am wondering why increase in ADH will cause hyponatremia? I thought that when ADH was released, that would trigger more sodium retention, hence more water retention. If this were the case, then wouldn't it be HYPERnatremia? Or did I think it wrong?

    1. Antidiuretic hormone causes water retention! That's it.

      More water reabsorbed = Hyponatremia
