Study group discussion: Metformin and weight

Metformin is for obese patients.

That's to decrease the chances for the person to get diabetes in the future.

Oh.

What's the cause of weight loss in diabetics?

But what's the mechanism for Metformin?

Metformin causes increased peripheral utilisation of glucose?

Don't remember..Just that line has been stuck since I read pharmacology in second year.

Prevents gluconeogenesis also.

It was evidence based medicine or something.

Oooh..Could be.

I made a mnemonic for it and that's why I remember xD

What's that? Mnemonic?

Got an awesomite mail answering our doubts yesterday.
What's the cause of weight loss in diabetics?

Especially in type 1, I believe it is because their absolute insulin lack favours gluconeogenesis via increased lipolysis, proteolysis e.t.c‎ and progressive weight loss

But what's the mechanism for Metformin?

It acts via ampk pathway, it used to be thought. That they acted via the ppar pathway of signalling. The best way to think about it is that they cause some change in the signalling and secondary messenger system that  allow glucose to enter into the cell independent of insulin or its receptor.

Metformin causes increased peripheral utilisation of glucose?

I think the answer for this is as offered above.
