Hypertrophy- is it just all about size?

Hypertrophy is a form of cellular adaptation mainly seen in the nondividing tissues of the body. It simply means increase in the individual cell size. But, is this all about hypertrophy?

Let's take an example of cardiac hypertrophy. In hypertrophy due to systemic overload, all the new contractile units will be laid parallel to one another and so the size of the myocytes will rise. However, in volume overload, the new units would be laid in series. Here, the size of the myocardial muscle won't rise... They would be thinned out. So, hypertrophied myocardium may or may not be thickened.

Then what is the most important factor indicating hypertrophy?  ...Weight!

Weight of any hypertrophied tissue is definitely increased.

TAKE HOME MESSAGE - THE MOST RELIABLE INDICATOR OF HYPERTROPHY IS THE WEIGHT OF THE ORGAN AND NOT THE SIZE NECESSARILY.
