mPFC activation in depression: The Associations

Hey Awesomites

I had talked about how people with neuroticism also have an advantage of being creative in a previous post.
Lets now know the basis of this in brief -

People with depression overthink about themselves and more negatively, and have trouble thinking about the world outside them. A region of the brain, the medial preFrontal cortex helps to co-ordinate self-appraisal processes by regulating activity in another area of the brain known as posterior cingulate cortex.

In depressed patients, the medial pFC has a greater influence over the posterior cingulate cortex that is also involved in such processes. So increased functional activity in these two areas has been shown to be associated with worsening of depressive symptoms.

Moreover, both these structures are crucial components of the brain's default mode network (DMN), activation of which is suppressed during cognitive tasking (as evidenced on fMRI studies). In depressed patients, this suppression happens to a lesser extent than in non-depressed individuals, hence there is increase of self- appraisal and self - referential processing of negative thoughts.
