What is the difference? : Meconium vs. Meconium Ileus

Hey Folks, Jay here!

Meconium is the very first stool ("poop") of a Neonate. This is mainly composed of the material that it ingested during its intrauterine life. This can include, amniotic fluid, mucus, bile, intestinal epithelium cells, lanugo and water.


Meconium Ileus, is when the neonate cannot "poop", because this Meconium is stuck inside the intestines. We know Ileus is "Stuck up poop" in the Ileum. So when the Meconium is stuck in the Ileum, we call it "Meconium Ileus"
This condition is very common in kids, who have Cystic Fibrosis!

    The 'ileus' in meconium ileus does not necessarily mean it is stuck in the ileum, rather that the constipation is severe. "By definition, ileus is an occlusion or paralysis of the bowel preventing the forward passage of the intestinal contents, causing their accumulation proximal to the site of the blockage" (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5569564/)
