Right IJV for assessment of right heart hemodynamics

Hello

Internal jugular vein of right side is preferred for right heart hemodynamics. This is because-



- Right jugular vein is extended in an almost straight line to superior vena cava. ( this favors transmission of hemodynamic changes from the right atrium).



- Left innominate vein angulates more and so can easily get kinked or compressed between aortic arch and sternum (due to aneurysm).

- Partial compression and obstruction of left innominate vein (though relieved by rest and on inspiration) impairs transmission of right atrial pressure to the left IJV. This causes unequal pressures in right and left jugulars.
