Polycythemia in newborns

Definition: Venous hematocrit of 65%

Clinical manifestations:
Ruddy, plethoric skin.

CNS - Lethargy, hypotonia, tremulousness, irritability.

Seizures.

Hypoglycemia, hypocalcemia, hyperbilirubinemia.

GI - Vomiting, distension, NEC.

Kidney - Renal vein thrombosis, acute renal failure.

Cardiopulmonary - Respiratory distress syndrome, congestive heart failure.

Treatment: Partial exchange transfusion.

That's all!
Remember the association with infants of diabetic mothers.
