Cincinnati pre-hospital stroke scale

Hey Awesomites

Cincinnati Pre - Hospital Stroke scale is one of the most common scale to detect stroke early on. Remember the mnemonic - FAST

F - Facial asymmetry : Ask the person to smile or show his teeth. If one side seems to droop or doesn't move as well as the other side, it could be a sign of stroke.

A - Arm drift : Ask the person to close his eyes and hold both arms straight out in front of his body for about 10 seconds.
If one arm drifts down more than the other, it could be a sign of stroke.

S - Speech abnormality : Ask the person to say a simple and familiar saying such as, "Happy and content people tend to live longer life."
If the person slurs the words, gets some words wrong, or is unable to speak, it could be the sign of stroke.

T - Time of Onset and Progression :
Onset -  Hemorragic stroke : During strenuous activity!
                      Thrombotic stroke : During sleep
                       Embolic stroke : Any time.

Progression - Hemorrhagic stroke : over a few minutes.
Thrombotic stroke - on waking up, over hours.
Embolic stroke - within seconds of onset.

Thats all
