Anti-Ro/SSA antibodies and neonatal lupus

Hello everyone!

Did you know? Anti-Ro/SSA antibodies are associated with neonatal lupus (congenital heart block (CHB), neonatal transient skin rash, hematological and hepatic abnormalities).

How do I remember this?

"Bachcha rota hai." Rota in Urdu/Hindi means to cry. A baby who cries because of heart block has Anti-Ro antibodies.

Those who don't speak the language, you can remember: "Baby cRy Ro because heart block yo." (LOL)

What is the treatment?

Fetus exposed to maternal SS-A (Ro) antibodies are at high risk of having fetal CHB and frequent surveillance at 16–20 weeks of gestation is required as early treatment in first & second degree heart block by steroids may improve the outcome of the fetus. The delivery should be planned in a tertiary care centre where pacemaker placement facility is available.

That's all!

I love love medicine. I am learning something new everyday < 3
