Prolactin mnemonic

Hello.

Prolactin is pro-lactation hormone. It aids in breast development during pregnancy and milk secretion from the breast during nursing.

It's regulation is kind of complex which is why we'll be learning about it today. I'll also be sharing a few mnemonics that will help you remember these facts!

Prolactin inhibits GnRH secretion. That's why, lactating mothers have amenorrhoea for a few weeks. Prolactin also antagonizes the effect of gonadotropins on the ovaries leading to inhibition of ovulation.
Mnemonic: "PIG"
Prolactin Inhibits GnRH.

Dopamine inhibits prolactin release. This is why, dopamine agonists like bromocriptine are used in the treatment of hyperprolactinemia.
It is also why, antipsychotics like chlorpromazine tend to increase prolactin secretion causing gynecomastia and sexual dysfunction in males.
Mnemonic: "DIP TIP"
Dopamine Inhibits Prolactin in the TuberoInfundibular Pathway.

The last prolactin related fact that you must remember is that thyrotropin releasing hormone stimulates prolactin secretion.
Mnemonic: "TRAPS"
TRH Aids in Prolactin Secretion.

Tip: If a female with amenorrhea presents to you, and you suspect hyperprolactinemia you first rule out hypothyroidism by measuring serum TSH.

That's all!
