Step 2 CK: Abdominal aortic aneurysm notes

Hey, here are my notes :)
Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) affect 1 to 2% of men > age 50.

Most AAAs are asymptomatic.

The predisposing factors for AAA are the same as those for other cardiovascular disease, with over 90% being associated with atherosclerotic disease.

Most AAAs are located infrarenally.

If < 5.5 cm, asymptomatic:
Smoking cessation
Exercise
Periodic surveillance (Annual or 6 monthly ultrasound)

Indications for surgery:
Patient with symptoms or an aneurysm that is growing rapidly.
All aneurysms larger than 5.5 cm warrant intervention.

Treated with endovascular stenting or surgery.

The rupture rate of an AAA is directly related to size.

No pharmacological therapies limit AAA expansion / prevents rupture.

That's all!
I loved Selena Gomez speech at the AMAs. It was so beautiful.
"If you are broken, you don't have to stay broken."
