Light's criteria for exudative pleural effusion

Here's a mnemonic on Light's criteria for exudative pleural effusion.

The mnemonic is: "Prove please, please please... That this fluid is an exudate."

PROve is for PROtein.
P-R-O-V-E has 5 letters.
P is the first letter.
So Pleural fluid protein / Serum protein > 0.5 for exudative pleural effusion.

Similarly, PLease is for LDH.
P-L-E-A-S-E has 6 letters.
P is the first letter.
So Pleural fluid LDH / Serum LDH > 0.6 for exudative pleural effusions.

Now, please please.
That's 6 and 6 letters.
P is the first letter.
So Pleural fluid LDH > 0.66 normal upper limit for serum LDH

Because 2/3 = 0.666666666666666666666666666666666 :P

Oh and how do you know it's greater than (not less than)
Because Exudate always has something Extra.
Like more proteins, LDH :D

Anyway, that's all folks!
I should get back to studying!

Also, here's a lame post I wrote on exudate vs transudate in my second year. Oh how the blog has matured since then < 3 :')
