USMLE Step 3: CCS pregnancy case checklist

Hello!

Here are things to do for a CCS pregnancy case -


The case begins - You do a complete physical, history will be suggestive of pregnancy,
Do a Beta HCG qualitative (urine or serum) stat.

Then order these:

I. Routine transvaginal USG

II. - Routine Tests in Prenatal Care - Initial Visit and First Trimester (mnemonic)
Blood
Urine
Infectious

Blood:
Hematocrit
Type and screen

Urine:
Urinalysis and culture

Infectious:
HIV
HbSAg
RPR/VDRL
Gonorrhea culture
Chlamydia culture
Pap smear (Not infectious - but I relate to HPV)
If immunization uncertain - Order Rubella antibody titres, Varicella antibody titres, PPD

III. Therapy:
Prenatal vitamins (Oral, continuous)
Ferrous sulfate (Oral, continuous)
Folic acid (Oral, continuous)

IV. Counseling - Smoking, alcohol

V. Schedule: Appointment in 4 weeks.

  1. if the case is UTI and pt is also pregnant = do we order all prenatal tests along with UTI treatment?
