Zebra series: Stauffer syndrome

Hello,

I'll be talking about Stauffer syndrome today!

In 1961, Stauffer described abnormal liver function tests, hepato-splenomegaly, histologic changes consistent with non-specific hepatitis, and recovery of these abnormalities after nephrectomy, in patients with Renal cell carcinoma (RCC). These abnormalities are seen in the absence of liver metastases. It is a paraneoplastic manifestation of RCC.

Cytokine production by the tumor, especially interleukin 6 are considered as the underlying pathogenetic mechanism of RCC patients who present with hepatic dysfunction.

That's all!
