Lamotrigine: A depression mood stabilizer

Lamotrigine is used primarily as an anticonvulsant for the treatment of generalized and partial seizures and is effective for treating focal epilepsies in the presence or absence of secondary generalization.

Antiepileptic activity of lamotrigine is mainly attributed to the inhibition of the voltage-sensitive sodium channels of the neuronal membrame, inhibition of the release of the excitatory amino acids such as glutamate and aspartate, and blockade of the calcium-channel.

Lamotrigine monotherapy is recently used to control the depressive symptoms as observed in bipolar disorder suggesting its profound role in the management of bipolar depression.

The exact mechanism by which lamotrigine acts as a mood stabilizer remains unclear.

Therefore, in patients with generalized epilepsy and psychiatric disease - lamotrigine should be considered because of its mood-stabilizing effects.

How do I remember this?

laMOtrigine has MOod stabilizing effects.
