Urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL)

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is an iron-transporting protein.

It rapidly accumulates in the kidney tubules and urine after nephrotoxic and ischemic insults.

This is why, it is as an early, sensitive, non-invasive biomarker for acute kidney injury (AKI).
