COVID-19: Lymphopenia and pneumonia

Hello everyone!

In the context of COVID-19, we will talk about two specific terms: Lymphopenia and Pneumonia.

COVID-19 Pneumonia
We mention "pneumonia" when there is an acute inflammation of the lungs following an infection. Pneumonia is one of the common features in infected patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This pneumonia has various clinical and radiological characteristics depending on the stage of the disease. It evolves rapidly, even in asymptomatic patients from local unilateral to diffuse bilateral ground-grass opacities which progress within 1-3 weeks to consolidation or co-exists with. A retrospective study at Wuhan describes radiological findings from 81 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The predominant pattern of abnormality observed was bilateral (79%), peripheral (54%), ill-defined (81%) and ground-glass opacification (65%), mainly involving the right lower lobes. [1]
What about lymphopenia?
Lymphopenia is defined by a total lymphocyte rate. <1000 adults="" age.="" children="" covid-19.="" described="" in="" is="" lymphopenia="" microliter="" of="" or="" p="" patients="" two="" under="" with="" years="">It is a common feature in patients with COVID-19 and might be a critical factor associated with disease and mortality. Li Tan presented the prognostic role of lymphopenia in COVID-19. Lymphocytes percentage was inversely associated with the progression and severity of COVID-19. Lymphopenia can be used as an indicator of disease severity and prognosis of COVID-19 patients.

If in the context of viral infections such as influenza, there is a lymphopenia or even a leukopenia, is it the same in the context of COVID-19?

It is evidently noted a low level of lymphocytes in individuals suffering from COVID-19 as previously discussed. This also occurs in those who have pneumonia associated with COVID-19. This is what is reported by C. Huang: Blood count of 25% of patients on admission showed leucopenia (white blood cell count less than 4109/L) and 63% of patients showed lymphopenia. <1 109="" p="">In conclusion, we notice that leukopenia mainly lymphopenia exists in the majority of patients followed but the most important is that this lymphopenia is a factor of poor prognosis. The early management of infected patients could make the difference, especially in patients at risks such as patients with hypertension or diabetes.
