Step 2 CK: AML (Acute myelogenous leukemia) notes

Hello! So these are my notes on AML :)

Presents with: Fatigue, infection, bleeding (Pancytopenia)

Best intial test: Peripheral blood smear showing blasts. (PBS findings mnemonics here.)
Most accurate: Flow cytometry.
Why? It helps distinguish between types of AML, which changes the management (Example, M3 is treated with ATRA)

Other characteristics of AML cells: Aeur rods, MPO positive.

Important associations:
M3 DIC, ATRA.
M5, gum infiltration.
Types of AML mnemonic here.

Treatment:
Induction Chemotherapy: Cytosine Arabinoside (ARA-C) and Daunorubicin or Idarubicin
Then, Cytogenetics - Good or bad?
Good - Perform consolidation chemotherapy with ARA-C.
Bad - Bone marrow transplantation.
(AML treatment mnemonic here.)

If leukostasis, blast count >100,000 or hyperviscosity symptom, do leukophoresis.

That's all!
I am spreading AML awareness.
