Factors increasing iron absorption in the intestine mnemonic

Hello! Long time, no see!

Did you know a number of dietary factors influence iron absorption?

Ascorbate (vitamin C) and citrate increase iron uptake in part by acting as weak chelators to help solubilize it in the duodenum.

Mnemonic:
C - Causes iron to Come inside the body
C for Citric acid
C for vitamin C (asCorbic acid)

This is why, iron supplements should be given with juice in between meals.

FYI: Iron absorption is inhibited by plant phytates and tannins. (Because tannins in tea chelate iron in the intestinal tract and prevent or reduce the absorption of dietary iron, regular consumption  of tea is encouraged in thalassemia.)

That's all!
