Causes of elevated serum amylase mnemonic:
- Renal insufficiency
- Acute pancreatitis
- Ischemia of mesentery
- Small intestine obstruction
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Abscess in fallopian tube and ovary
- Mumps /Malignancy (pancreatic carcinoma)
Note - Elevation of serum lipase is more specific than that of serum amylase for acute pancreatitis. Serum lipase takes more time to clear from the blood. Marked elevation of serum lipase in pleural/ peritoneal fluid ( more than 5,000 IU/dL ) suggests acute pancreatitis.
