TORCH syndrome is caused by congenital infection by a group of infectious agents.
The TORCH acronym initially stood for toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex. However, it also includes other organisms including syphilis, parvovirus, and varicella-zoster. Zika virus is considered the most recent member of TORCH infections.
Some people also call it TORCHeSZ infections to include syphilis and the zika virus.
