Hello
Vascular access during cardiac catheterization (in cases of myocardial infarction, for example) obtained through femoral artery above the level of inguinal ligament may lead to retroperitoneal hematoma due to arterial puncture.
Risk factors include:
- female patient
- large sheath size
- left groin access
- low body surface area

Note: bleeding in retroperitoneal space cannot be controlled with external compression. Check for signs of acute hemorrhage - hemodynamic instability, ipsilateral flank pain, hypotensive crisis.
